Ban on celebrity alcohol endorsement poses challenges for sponsorships – Ola Michael

Members of the entertainment sector have criticized Ghana’s restriction on celebrities endorsing alcoholic products.

The Supreme Court heard a case challenging the Food and Drugs Authority’s (FDA) regulation on Wednesday, November 15.

Ola Michael, an entertainment analyst, and other industry figures have expressed differing views on the matter and expressed worries about the difficulties the prohibition may present for celebrity endorsements in the business. Michael proposed the possibility of more effective regulatory measures to regulate alcohol marketing and their effects on society during a discussion on the weekly UTV Showbiz Night.

He noted that because of the strict regulations, the industry finds it difficult to obtain sponsorship for events as a result of the FDA’s actions.

Michael said, “The restrictions placed by the FDA on alcohol-related advertisements have not only had an impact on musicians, but have also made it more difficult for these beverage companies to offer sponsorship to artists. Regretfully, the FDA is failing to see that young people are abusing energy drinks in addition to the alcohol they are discussing.”

He urged the regulatory body to critically review these developments and consider better control measures to guide such advertisements while also raising awareness among the public.
